If you’re at the start of your research about the PMP® credential, here are some useful points to note:

  • The Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential is one of the most widely-recognised and best-respected project management qualifications worldwide.
  • The PMP® credential is awarded by the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI)®.
  • It was designed by the PMI® in the early 1980s as a qualification specifically for experienced project managers. As such, PMP® credential holders are known to be accomplished project management professionals.
  • There were 932, 720 active PMP® certified individuals as of August 2019 (source, Wikipedia).
  • The PMP® exam is based around the PMI’s flagship publication, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide).

What are the PMP® Exam Requirements?


The PMP® credential is suited to seasoned project managers and requires documented experience of actively managing and working on projects.

There are 2 routes of eligibility when applying to sit your PMP® exam:

PMP Requirement Steps

Route 1:


Route 1 is a great option for those who do not hold a 4-year degree. It does, however, require a longer period of documented project management experience:

  • Leaving Certificate or international equivalent (a high school diploma).

  • 5+ years of documented project management experience (with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects).

  • 35 hours of formal project management training.

Route 2:


Route 2 requires less project management experience, but a higher education degree:

  • A 4-year bachelor’s degree or international equivalent.

  • 3+ years of documented project management experience (with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects).

  • 35 hours of formal project management training.
